It's a mad mad mad mad prisoner's dilemma
Popularizers of science, and particularly economic social science, are fond of game theory. Just the other day, I heard the prisoner's dilemma again being discussed, this time on a recent Radio Lab segment. The prisoner's dilemma is a mathematical formalization from the 1950's of an old philosophical topic, and game theory has appeared explicitly in many movies. But my new favorite, almost as old as the prisoner's dilemma itself, is It's a mad, mad, mad, mad world from 1963. It's a classic movie, but also a movie with an entertaining game-theory interpretation. I'm not going to run with the observation as far as Jane Austen, Game Theorist as taken a similar observation, though, since the game theory totally misses out on the humour and the human components.
