Fareed Zakaria has a column on Why America’s obsession with STEM education is dangerous. As a practicianer and educator in STEM, I think he's got a point.
The STEM emphasis feels like the human equivalent of statistical over-fitting, potentially leading sacrificing robustness for efficiency and fragility, like SFI was talking about last year. Their's a very dark passage in The Quantum Thief1 where children are enslaved into code monkey's in the most dehumanizing way imaginable -- not a path any of us should want for our children.
