As I watch and work, it seems right now that we are at a critical point in human, social, and cultural evolution. It's not quite a "singularity" as some have called it, but it is certainly singular in that it is a time that will never be repeated and where our actions and decisions will have far-reaching consequences. The big question for me is if pockets of human society can persist at a high level of sophistication without losing our liberties, or if to stay free we must relinquish this sophistication to our posthuman and post-biologic progeny, and ALL of us must fall back to a resource-limited subsistance existence.
